About This Item
New York, NY Henry Holt, 1939. Hardcover First Edition (1939). From a Dissertation copyrighted in 1930. First Edition in this form (1939). UNDERLINING AND MARGINALIA IN RED PENCIL AND INK throughout the text. Else, Good+: shows moderate wear to the extremities; a former owner's address sticker at the upper corner of the front pastedown endpaper; the DJ flaps have been tacked into the front endpapers; extensive notations to the rear endpapers; the binding leans ever so slightly but remains secure. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. A carefully-used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing only the mildest wear but of course possessing some serious flaws. Would make a good reading copy if one could overlook the pen and pencil work. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.75 x 5.75 x 1.2 inches). Language: English. Weight: 21.4 ounces. Blue cloth over boards with gilt titles at the backstrip. First Edition in this form (1939) expanded from a Dissertation copyrighted in 1930. Hardback: Lacks DJ. Alvin Boyd Kuhn (1880 1963) was an American Theosophist,. His thesis, Theosophy: A Modern Revival of the Ancient Wisdom was, according to Kuhn, the first instance in which an individual has been "permitted" by any modern American or European university to obtain his doctorate with a thesis on Theosophy. Kuhn later expanded his thesis into his first book of the same name. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 1931, he spent the next 30 years writing, lecturing, and running his own publishing house, Academy Press in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It was Kuhn's contention that the Bible derived its origins from other (pagan) religions and much of Christian history was pre-extant as Egyptian mythology. He also proposed that the Bible was symbolic and did not depict historical events.
