First edition, first printing. viii, 400, (2, ads) pp. Publisher's dark green ribbed cloth ruled in blind, with titles in gilt on spine, top edge gilt. Very Good, with light edge wear. Cloth with slight fading to spine cloth, light soiling and cup ring to upper board. Armorial bookplate of Sir Arthur Nicholson, Bart. (1849-1928) on front pastedown. Former ownership in pencil of Rebecca Douglas Lowe (1844-1918) on front free endpaper; front and rear gutters tender with and exposed and a vintage Brentano's bookseller ticket at rear pastedown.

An extremely influential socio-economic analysis of class in modern life, which, among other things, introduced the concept of "conspicuous consumption."

Provenance of Arthur Nicholson, 1st Baron Carnock a British diplomat and politician during WWI. He' was the father-in-law of English author and Bloomsbury Group member Vita Sackville-West.

Synopsis

The Theory of the Leisure Class is a book, first published in 1899, by the Norwegian-American economist Thorstein Veblen while he was a professor at the University of Chicago. Veblen claimed he wrote the book as a perceptive personal essay criticizing contemporary culture, rather than as an economics textbook. Critics claim this was an excuse for his failure to cite sources.
