1688 AFRICA 1ed History EGYPT Mummies Pyramids Illustrated Tunisia MAPS LaCroixPherotee La Croix's "Universal Relation of Africa" is a famous 17th-century history of Africa. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history. However, much of La Croix's "Afrique" was heavily inspired by Dutch author Olfert Dapper's "Description of Africa".
Even still, La Croix's work is notable for the exquisite full-page and folding engravings as well as descriptions of some of the greatest mysteries of Africa including a section on Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and mummies! Other topics include voyages to the Barbary coast, Tunisia, Algiers, and Morocco.

Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius (1636-1708) was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker (1675), Utrecht (1680), and Leiden (1698). [EB11]. His Aegyptiaca (first printed in 1683) compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first.…
