About This Item

Seattle:: University of Washington Press,, 1978.. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine tight copy of the hardcover edition in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. This Out-of-Print photographic history is lushly illustrated with black and white photographs of the tall masted vessels that worked the waters of Puget Sound in the late 1800s. Photographer Wilhelm Hester was an immigrant from Germany who arrived in Seattle in 1893 and at twenty-one chose to make his living taking photographs of sailing ships and their crews. During his career, he produced an unparalled record of the sailing ships and seamen of his day, marked by an artistic eye and a strong feeling for the seagoing life.
