About This Item

London England: Victor Gollancz. Very Good/Good. 1971. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0575013419 Harback Hardback. Slight shelf wear to top edge og D/J. With a Foreword by Dame Sybil.Sybil Thorndike has taken an immense number of roles, but there is no disputing that the one which brought her the greates fame was Saint Joan, in the paly which Bernard Shaw wrote for her. There are some fascinating glimpses of Shaw, as there are of Gilbert Murray, whose transalations of the Greek dramatists she so greatly admires, and whom she regards as probably the most beautiful man (in the spiritual sense) she ever met. There are wonderful vignettes, too, of many other famous contemporary playwrights, and of the host of actors and adtresses whom she has numbered amongst her friends. Here, then, is a unique picture of the woman who at eighty-eight, as she sits perfectly still in her chair, looking out on the world with her clear, lively blue eyes, generates more electricity from her little finger than most of us do in our entire lives. Illustrated. 348 pp. ( We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) .
