About This Item

Paris, 1775. Very good condition. Large detailed copper engraved map showing the first part of the tracks of the voyage of Semyon Deshnev (ca. 1605 - 1673,) the first European to pass through the Bering Strait in 1648, 80 years before Bering did so, confirming European geographers who had thought that the "Strait of Anian" separated Asia and North America.

The map centering on eastern Russia and the Mer d'Ochozk (Sea of Okhotsk) showing the Kamchatka Peninsula and I. de Beringe and I. Sagalin. The map showing the tracks of Russian ships voyage to Kamschatka: "voyage fait par mer en 1648 par 3 vaisseaux Russiens dont un est parvenu a la Kamtschatka" (1648 voyage by 3 Russian ships, one of which arrived in Kamchatka). With decorative cartouche. From Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages".

Bellin (1703 - 1772), one of the most noted French mapmakers of the 18th century, was named the hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy, and later, the Official Hydrographer to the French King.

Folding, 11 x 10 1/4", with ample margins. Strong impression, very clean.
