About This Item

Toronto: Rose Publishing Company (Ltd.), [1891]. First Canadian Edition. Jameson served as naturalist on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition in 1888-89 to Equatoria under the direction of Henry Morton Stanley. He was left as second in command of the rear-column at Yambuya, in the Congo, where they were to wait for more provisions and carriers to be sent by Chief Tippu-Tib. The chief however failed to keep his word and one third of the party at Yambuya perished from sickness and privation. Jameson himself later died of fever at Bangala. A scandal arose when Stanley published a story in the Times newspaper that Jameson had basically paid to see a young slave girl killed and cannibalized and made sketches of the scene on the spot. Appended to the present account are a number of documents relating to the expedition and the ornithological and entomological specimens Jameson collected. 8vo. pp. xxxii, 455. frontis. portrai, 1 map in 2 long folding sheets, 2 folding facsimiles & numerous illus. (many full-page) by C.Whymper after original sketches by Jameson. original pictorial cloth (extremities a bit frayed). elala5946
