About This Item
Toronto: McCelland & Steward, 1992. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First printing. Hardcover. 319 pp. with index. Illustrated with photos. fine in fine dust jacket. In 1892, Canada's Governor General Frederick Arthur Stanley, much taken with the fast-paced game of hockey, decided that the sport needed a championship between the best hockey associations in the Dominion. At the cost of $48.67 from his own pocket, he bought a trophy to be presented to the winners. Over the next century, Lord Stanley's cup became the most famous trophy in the world of sport, sitting today top a series of silver rings bearing the engraved names of the players of the annual championship teams. This book examines the century of The Cup as it witnessed the rise and fall of professional leagues, hockey's expansion into the United States, the domination in their times of the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, and Oilers.
