San Francisco: The Blair-Murdock Company, 1913. No binding. Good. Treidler, Adolph. Quarto size, a single sheet. Adolph Treidler (1886-1981) was an illustrator of posters and commercial art, best known for his World War I propaganda posters featuring women working in munitions plants; he was a member of the Society of Illustrators and created posters for Women Ordnance Workers (WOWs) (n. b., info from Wikipedia).
This small advertising poster is a promotion for the then-newly developed neighborhood St. Francis Wood in San Francisco, with a facsimile of a full-colour illustration by Treidler portraying St. Francis of Assisi surrounded by birds; the reverse side has information regarding the neighborhood and the construction of the Twin Peaks Tunnel. "Soon to be reached by Twin Peaks Tunnell" ... "Now reached direct by Ellis Street Cars - No. 17". The neighborhood is eulogized ("streets all bituminized - sidewalks, sewers, water, gas, all installed - wires all laid on conduits (not a pole in the tract) - parks, fountains, gateways, all done - everything ready for the home builder"), with "seven new houses costing from $4000 to $15,000, with plans already drawn". A fascinating glimpse back in time with a lovely illustration by a noted artist.
___DESCRIPTION: One sheet with full-colour facsimile of an illustration of St. Francis by Adolph Treidler, inside a black ruled border; on the reverse, information about the St. Francis Wood neighborhood; quarto size (11" by 9") with 7.75" by 5.25" illustration.
___CONDITION: Poster is good, with bright colours, reverse side with lettering is clean overall with some minor soiling, front side with illustration has overall soiling and slight foxing, some creases to the corners and margins, a small hole at the top margin, and a small (half-inch) closed tear to the right margin not affecting either the illustration or text; in addition, a previous owner wrote the name of the artist in pencil on the lower right margin of the illustration.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
