The collected issues of The Sporting Magazine (or Monthly Calendar of the Transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and every other Diversion Intriguing to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprise, and Spirit) for the year 1805. Possible to open at almost any page and find something amusing or diverting, from the fields of sport but also far beyond. In generally good order, but some pages quite heavily foxed and marked and with some wear. Plates present, not the least being "The Duke Of Bedford's Curious Pig". Roughly bound in quarter leather, but this and paper-covered boards well worn. 8vo.

London: Rogerson and Tuxford, 1853. Hardcover. Good. 12 illustrations (2 for each month), 468, [145]-170, ii, 41, [1], 22p. Contemporary 1/2 leather. Cover scuffed but still quite sound. Moderate foxing (mostly on plates and facing pages). The Turf Register seems incomplete at end (pages 1-22 and 145-170 appear to be the only Turf Registers present. Text portion of all six issues seems complete and all 12 plates called for are also present.

London: Printed for the Proprietors and Sold by J. Wheble, 1794 - 1795.. [2],343,[1],40pp. plus frontis, engraved extra-title and ten engraved plates. Octavo. Handsome full late 19th century calf, gilt extra, gilt labels, t.e.g.. Bound to contemporary style, but without wrappers, slight foxing to some margins and occasional minor discolorations, but a very good copy. The complete fifth volume, comprised of the issues for October 1794 through March 1795, plus the appended Racing Calendar. In its early volumes, the contents generally consisted of essays and articles covering all aspects of sport, including hunting of exotic game, horse racing in Britain, shooting, game laws, veterinary science, boxing, rules of card games, cricket, etc. Includes a section ("The High Court of Diana") devoted to the poetry of sport and the chase. Occasional fiction also appeared. Publication began in 1792 and ceased in 1870. ESTC P2463. CRANE & KAYE 841. NCBEL II:1309.
