London: The Mandrake Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 Volumes. Hardcover. Quarto. Issued in an edition of 800 copies and printed on Japanese vellum. Bound in white buckram with Crowleys far-out self portrait and titles in black to front of both volumes. Gilt titles, volume numbers, and phallic seven-pointed star design to spines. Issued without dust jackets. Bevelled edges. Top edges gilt. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. 284, 307 pages. Illustrated with full-page black and white photographs plus several diagrams (all present). Errata slip attached at end of second volume. This set is in very nice condition. Boards remain surprisingly white (as opposed to yellowed as is often the case), Gilt spine titles and decorations still bright. The lightest of rubbing and handling wear to boards. One or two extremely tiny corner bumps, some mild foxing to spine on volume one and sporadic foxing to inner buckram edges around end papers. One match head-sized hole to the paper at the lower inner hinge of volume one. Bindings are strong and secure. If the book was read, it was done very carefully. This set remains in near fine condition. Increasingly scarce and especially desirable in this well-preserved state. The original 8 page prospectus is included with this set. It is in good to very good condition, showing some edge and corner wear, with some light creases, staples have rusted, and there are a few short edge tears. This very scarce piece of Crowley ephemera is rarely seen. See below for details on the prospectus. This Aleister Crowley was not a man, or even a number of men; he is obviously a Solar Myth. Nor could he himself deny such an impeachment too brutally; for already, before he has attained the prime of his life, his name is associated with fables not less fantastic than those which have thrown doubt upon the historicity of the Buddha. It should be the True Will of this book to make plain the truth about the man. Yet here again there is a lion in the way. The truth must be falsehood unless it be the whole truth; and the whole truth is partly inaccesible, partly unitelligible, partly incredible, and partly unpublishable - that is, in any country where truth in itself is recognized as a dangerous explosive. ... At least one claim can be made; nothing has been invented, nothing suppressed, nothing altered, and nothing yellowed up. I believe that truth is not only stranger than fiction, but more interesting. And I have no motive for deception, because I dont give a damn for the whole human race - youre nothing but a pack of cards. - Aleister Crowley (from the Prelude). This is the first edition of Crowleys Confessions in two volumes. Crowleys desire was that this work be published in six total volumes but due to various financial factors and the eventual demise of The Mandrake Press, the project had to be halted after the first two volumes. In 1969 John Symonds and Kenneth Grant were able to edit and issue a single, abridged volume edition of The Confessions which included much from the four unpublished volumes. A fair amount of text and several photographs from these first two volumes were not included in the later editions, much of this material was related to Crowleys mountaineering and travel adventures and is available nowhere else. As to the rare 8 page prospectus: the cover shows a portrait of Crowley by Augustus John and includes publishing information. Page two contains a one page essay by P.R. Stephenson called "Is Aleister Crowley a Saint"?, page 3 shows a classic b/w photo of Crowley, page 4 lists the complete contents of volumes one and two, page 5 shows three additional b/w Crowley photos, pages 6 and 7 consist of a synopsis of the unpublished volumes III-VI, and also on page 7 is a color reproduction of Crowley's painting: Four Red Monks Carrying a Goat Across the Snow to Nowhere. The back cover (page 8) lists publications by Crowley.

book is bumped on upper board by spine, else "Fine." Unclipped* wrapper has two short closed tears, gently faded spine and just a bit of wear at spine head. *a Nash inventory re-order form is still attached to rear jacket flap-something which is clearly unintended for the purchaser. Aquarian Press, 1970, in soft wraps. Terrific lurid. A veritable time capsule which can serve as a bona fide research tool for those with an interest of the heady days of late 1960s London. No website to hide behind; here were REAL names of both adepts & quacks and where to find them! An interesting artifact- though don't expect to trace many of these street addresses now. Uncommon vintage paperback. Exceptional condition save for spotting on all edges. Very tight binding, extremely clean. Almost "As New". Inv. # 62542 bds 2023

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
