About This Item
1910. NEALE, Walter. The Sovereignty of the States: An Oration Address to the Survivors of the Eighth Virginia Regiment, While They Were Gathered about the Graves of Their Fallen Comrades, on the Battle-Ground of Manassas July 21, 1910. New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1910. 1st ed. 143 pp. Orig. cloth. A very good copy. "An amazingly lengthy oration dedicated to supporting the premises under which the Confederacy fought. Neale decries the 'War of Reconstruction' as 'the most horrible of all modern wars.' He speaks of how the North is stealing from 'we of the south' and concludes with the challenge: 'take up the arms that you laid down at Appomattox, that you fight without ceasing, until southerners again enjoy the rights so long denied to them. You and your children must not die slaves.'" Krick 342.
