Russell, New York, 1903, softcover string bound, 7-1/2" x 10-3/4", vi, 14 pages (last page blank), lightly glossed pages of heavier paper, 6 full-page illustrations/plates of characters in costume signed "Chas. A. Buchel 1903" in each plate including frontispiece; NOTES: HENRY IRVING, 1838-1905, Victorian era English stage actor known as an actor-manager for having responsibility for all aspects of production including sets, lighting, direction, and casting and also playing the leading roles…first actor to be awarded a knighthood (1895)…"Dante" was the last play staged by Irving and his company, and his last role…in 1905 while the play was on tour, Irving suffered a stroke during a performance and died a short time later (wikipedia); CHARLES A. BUCHEL, 1872-1950, born in Mainz, Germany…emigrated to England as a child…studied at the RA Schools and worked frequently for the theatre world, including commissioned portraits of famous actors of the time. (askART note) ///// CONDITION: very good-plus or better, spots on minor edgewear, 1/2" curved tear near bottom front of spine, light marginal crease in lower left corner of frontispiece (outside of image), previous owner's name at top edge of front cover.
