About This Item

Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1903. Second Edition. Hardcover. 264p. A dark brown cloth hardcover book in good condition. Spine faded and corners rubbing through. The head and foot of the spine are starting to fray, and there is a jagged closed tear in the cloth at the bottom. Closed tears on the sides of the table of contents through page 4 (about 1.5" long). Light smudges on page 39. Page 261-262 is dog-eared. Otherwise, text unmarked. The rear hinge is cracking, but the binding is still generally secure for reading purposes. A very scarce early edition; the first two editions printed by McClurg in 1903 are hard to find and collectible. A classic of African-American literature by NAACP founder W.E.B. Du Bois!

Synopsis

The Souls of Black Folk is a classic work of American literature by W. E. B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of sociology, and a cornerstone of African-American literary history. The book, published in 1903, contains several essays on race, some of which had been previously published in Atlantic Monthly magazine. Du Bois drew from his own experiences to develop this groundbreaking work on being African American in American society.
