Pfefferkorn was a Jesuit missionary among the Pima, Opata, and Eudebe Indians in Sonora for eleven years, returning to Germany after the expulsion of the Jesuits from America. His famous Description of the Province of Sonora, first published at Cologne in 1794-95 and translated here for the first time, is among the most important documents we have on Northwestern Mexico in the middle eighteenth century. It comprises a remarkable digest of information on the Indian tribes, their modes of living, their houses, utensils, occupations, language, religion and customs, and also the climate, environment, minerals, and missions of the region.
