VG* Illustrations: None.* Pages: 297 pp. text. vpp. Blank at rear.* Description: Bernadette a young girl born into poverty and suffering from asthma has a religious experience of a vision of The Virgin Mary which the hierarchy don't believe. The physical manifestation of the event is a sacred well which springs from the ground following her touch. This well cures people of their sickness and after the cure of The Emperor's infant son, the Empress takes up her case and after many years the Church recognises her saintliness but insists that she enter a convent for her preservation. She is hounded by the nun in charge of novices, Sister Vauzou, but eventually everyone is persuaded that she has been telling the truth. She dies of TB at the end but is supported by the Abbé Peyramale who remarks at the end: ""You are now in Heaven and on earth.
