About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1957 Red cloth spine over black paper-covered boards; black spine lettering. First edition with A - 10 -57 [H] on copyright page. The author's second novel, the story of a war veteran with literary aspirations who returns to his hometown in Illinois after a failed writing career. According to one opinion, it's a thinly-disguised autobiographical novel of Jones's experiences in his hometown of Robinson, Illinois, immediately after returning from World War II. The film version was released in 1958. Light rubbing to cover extremities. Upper cover corners have taken hard bumps, with a few pages of rear text block showing light corresponding indentations. Spine cloth faintly sunned. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.
