About This Item

New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc, 1971. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket (lightly rubbed, but no chips, tears, or creases). Clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Sharp corners. Not a book club edition. Not price clipped ($6.95). No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Novel of WWII British soldiers. Honestly recreates the far-fetched rumors, crude jokes, sex, and gambling of lonely soldiers on leave in Calcutta, India (the "capital of whoredom"). Also captures the bitterness of the fighting against the Japanese by the 14th Army in Burma "where it was men rather than machines that turned the tide." Bound in the original reddish cloth, stamped in bright gold on the spine and front cover. From the dust jacket: "In A SOLDIER ERECT Brian W. Aldiss has written one of the most irreverent and wildly funny books yet to appear about the way of World War II combat soldiers behaved - really behaved - while on leave in foreign countries." . First Printing of the First US Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Very Good dust jacket. Illus. by Mikolaycak, Charles (dust jacket art). 8vo. 272pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
