About This Item

New York: Published by Hurd and Houghton, 1869. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Small 4to. [3], iv-viii, [1], 2-192, [2] pp. Pebbled brown leather with two gilt rules on each board and a device stamped in gilt on each board, spine is in six compartments with gold lettering; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Title page printed in red and black. Illustrated with a frontispiece, with several plates, and numerous in-text and full-page illustrations (eighty-eight illustrations in all). Second edition, published one year after the first. Darley's volume is composed of excerpts from letters written home concerning his travels around the states and Europe. His sketches illuminate the scenes described in his letters. The final page is a charming self-portrait in miniature, of Darley tipping his cap to the reader for their time. A whimsical collection of brief travel vignettes. Minor rubbing to the boards' edges.
