About This Item

London, UK / New York : Octopus/Heinemann/Doubleday , 1985 Octopus/Heinemann/Doubleday, London, UK / New York. 1985. Hardcover. Stated 2nd Impression. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Very Good +; light peripheral toning to pages. DJ: Very Good +; light rubbing to panels; light bumping to ED edges. Maroon leatherette boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Cream colored endpapers. 937 pp 8vo. The author is a master of the short story. Professional and entertaining, his stories show a range of humor, period detail, and foreign color that will satisfy every taste. Superbly constructed, deceptively simple, these stories reveal his brilliant observation of human nature and his ability to pinpoint the ridiculous in society. Written intermittently between 1899 and 1947, the stories have been grouped by the author himself according to their locale so that "the reader can take his bearings in whatever distant land i choose to lead him to". A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
