17 volumes with frontispieces, illustrations and indexes. Royal octavo (9 3/4"" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's light green cloth with labels to spine. and gilt head end pages with deckled edges. Bassorah edition, number 129 limited to 1000 copies.Burton's translation was one of two unabridged and unexpurgated English translations done in the 1880s; the first was by John Payne, under the title The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night (1882–1884, nine volumes). Burton's ten volume version was published almost immediately afterward with a slightly different title. This, along with the fact that Burton closely advised Payne and partially based his books on Payne's, led later to charges of plagiarism. Owing to the sexual imagery in the source texts (which Burton made a special study of, adding extensive footnotes and appendices on "Oriental" sexual mores) and to the strict Victorian laws on obscene material, both translations were printed as private editions for subscribers only, rather…

Description:
New York: Thr Grolier Club/William Edwin Rudge Printing, 1927. Limited Edition. Quarto. Limited to 390 copies. xxiii, 208 pages translated and annotated by George B. Ives, designed, and printed by Bruce Rogers. Aldus praised the original edition for its adaptation of the roman type in its use of the French language. His discussion of the formation of roman capitals by geometric means led to many advances in design in early printing. His models for the capitals, set within a modular grid, displayed an approach to their construction that was unique to Tory, and his commentary critiqued the parallel efforts of the early letterform theorists. Bound in 1/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards, spine lettering gilt, spine somewhat darkened, in near fine dust jacket showing minor wear to spine ends, housed within publisher's slipcase showing wear to edges. A very nice copy.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British.
