About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1898. Second Edition. Octavo. 23cm. Publisher's oatmeal coloured heavy buckram, titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. 305pp. Cloth browned to spine and toned around the edges, with some additional soiling and a couple of ink splashes to the front board. Strong and sturdy with some fraying and bumping at the spine ends. Slight lean. A very good, solid copy. Internally clean with the bookplate of T.R. Young to the front pastedown (bearing the Pliny quotation "Ex Africa Semper Aliquid Novi"; "Out of Africa there is always something new"). There is a possibility, given the subject matter and the quotation, that the bookplate is that of T. "Rex" Young, the author of "West African Agent: A British Coaster's Anglo-French Log." Tissue guard to frontispiece portrait, fore-edge untrimmed. A very nicely produced volume, from the war correspondent of the Daily Telegraph who was embedded with H.H. Kitchener's forces, and witnessed most of the major actions of the campaign. Illustrated throughout with plates in text, with a large folding map of the Soudan region to the rear of the book.
