About This Item

London England: Collins, 1959. Sir Charles Dilke was born in 1843 and died in 1911. His career is one of the mysteries and tragedies of nineteenth century history. In the summer of 1885 he rode on the high tide of political success. He was the youngest member of the out-going Gladstone Cabinet. He and Joseph Chamberlain, bound together by the firmest of political alliances, represented the rising force of Radicalism, and of the two, Dilke was the more favourably placed for the highest office. He was regarded as Gladstone's likely successor in the leadership of the Liberal Party. This agreeable life and immensely promising career were both shattered in July 1885. Mr. Roy Jenkins, in addition to providing a full biographical study of Dilke, attempts to unravel this mystery. Foxing to end pages and edges. Wear and tear to D/J. Small piece of D/J missing from top of spine. Foxing to back of D/J. Plastic protective covering over D/J.
