About This Item

Royal Society, London, fourth edition, 1980 and supplement to fourth edition, 1987. Cloth, gilt cover device, folio, (and supplement in printed wrappers, folio),. ix, 128 pp, facs (with supplement of 12 pp). The main volume provides facsimiles of signatures of founders, patrons and fellows from 1660 to 1979. From the introduction: "Since the appearance of the third edition 1029 candidates have been elected to the Fellowship and Foreign Membership in the period 1950-79 and 986 Fellows and Foreign Members have signed the Obligation. In June 1978 the Council resolved that an entirely new edition should be produced by photolithography, rather than in collotype, as previously, and that the Royal pages should be shown in colour for the first time. In previous editions the Obligation at the head of each page was set uniformly in Fell type but in this edition it was decided that the pages of the Charter-Book should be reproduced in their entirety from the original so that the inscription of the Obligation, can be seen in varying styles of handwriting over the centuries. The index to the first edition and the two supplementary indexes have now been combined in one alphabetical sequence, to which has been added the names of signatories up to 1979." Contents: Part I: The Signatures of the persons who on 5 December 1660, resolved to form a Society for promoting Experimental Philosophy. Part II: The Signatures in the Charter-Book of the Royal Society, from that of King Charles II, who incorporated the Society in the year 1662, down to those of the Fellows elected in 1979. Part III: Index to the Signatures in the Charter-Book of the Royal Society, from that of King Charles II in 1664 down to those of the Fellows elected in 1979, with the Dates of Election and the pages on which the Signatures will be found.
