New York: The Viking Press, 1951 First printing of the first edition. Signed and inscribed by Phyllis McGinley and Roberta Macdonald directly on the front-free endpage, with a hand drawn illustration of a castle with a moat and drawbridge: "For Eleanor Palffy / for whom I would / walk farther than / the station / with affection, / Phyllis MGinley" and "For Eleanor / who is holding the fort. / Love from Mackie /(R. M.)" Association: Countess Eleanor Palffy was a writer, socialite, and Hungarian expatriate. Book with rubbing to board extremities, light toning to endpapers, and a small shallow stain to outer fore-edge, else in fine condition; dust jacket with a diagonal chip to upper front cover, moderate wear to extremities, a couple short closed tears, a faint moisture mark along back cover fold, else fine.
McGinley was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1960.
