[3], 4-512, [2] pp. Blue-green publisher's cloth with a device in blind and borders in blind on each board, brown lettering on the spine. Yellow endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with seven plates and four maps. Nevins 40. Gathered from interviews and other primary sources (including an interview with U.S. Grant), this biography details the strategy and mindset of General W.T. Sherman. Nevins states that this work is also a defense of Sherman. The corners and spine edges rubbed, a bookplate on the free front endpaper, light foxing to the rear endpaper and pastedown.
