Previous bookseller rubber-stamped their name and address on front free endpaper, along with small ink note (?). Small, six digit number, rubber stamped to title page. Could be previous bookseller's inventory number (any bookseller dumb enough to rubber stamp their name to endpaper, would be dumb enough to rubber stamp an inventory number). Otherwise, free of markings. Very slight shelf wear; else very good, to near fine. The dust jacket has some chipping along the top edge with several small closed tears, a touch of soiling; else in good, to good plus, condition. No price on dust jacket, hence this edition sold in Canada (identical to British edition).

Toronto & London: Collins, 1985. First Canadian Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interior of the book is crisp and clean. There is a gift inscription to a former owner (Xmas 1986) on the front free end paper, and a small number stamped on the title page (which seems to have been common with the Canadian edition), but no other marks or wear. The brown and cream covers are fresh, with minor wear to the top and bottom of the spine. The copper gilt spine lettering is still bright. The dust jacket is not clipped (but shows no price), and is also in very good condition, with light wear, but no rips, chips or damage. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. A very nice copy.

1st Canadian edition (export edition of the 1st British edition, not priced, different dust-jacket). Flamboyantly INSCRIBED by Cornwell on the title page in Green ink: "For Les Walton, a pleasure to meet you!", signed "Bernard Cornwell". I suspect Cornwell was in Canada promoting his new book, maybe in Toronto.

Very good, despite damp splash to top edge at spine, that has caused a little wrinkling to top margins. This is quite unobtrusive, and does not reach the text. Jacket has a little peripheral fading, and is a bit stained at top edge from aforementioned splash. Still apresentable copy. Inscribed to Jim, on the title page..
