About This Item

Chicago:: Johnson Publishing Co Inc,, 1975.. Hardcover first edition -. Very near fine in brown cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover in a rather poor example of the uncommon dustjacket (tears, significant loss to upper edge of back cover, but the original price of $15.95 is still present on the dj flap). First edition. Starting with the landing of the first blacks at Jamestown in 1619, this looks not just at the first black inhabitants of the colonies but also at the custom of white servitude which preceded the slave trade. It is divided into two sections - foundations and directions - and it highlights alternatives which could have been taken, but were not. Illustrated with sepia-toned full page drawings by Charles White. Bibliography, index. Large square format. 356 pp.
