About This Item
New York:: Scribner's,, 1948.. Hardcover first edition -. Ex-library, but the only markings in the book are a pocket on the rear pastedown, mostly hidden by the dustjacket flap and a small light stamp on the title page. Overall, a tight copy in a somewhat edgeworn dustjacket, with rubbing and loss of color along the folds and sides of the spine, and a small white rectangle on the spine where a label was removed. Some offsetting to the endpapers. Despite the flaws, this is still a reasonably attractive copy of a book which is quite scarce in the dustjacket. . First printing, with the Scribner seal and A on the copyright page. Hurston's fourth, and final, novel. This is the story of Arvey and Jim Meserve - Jim had gumption and wanted to get ahead, and so they moved from the Suwanee to the citrus belt in Florida, but the heart of the story is Arvey's long stumbling progress towards self-discovery and fulfillment. On the back cover of the dustjacket is a 2 column brief biography headed by 'Zora Neale Hurston writes about herself:' Original price of $3.00 still present. 311 pp.
