About This Item
London: may be had at the Vestry of Dr Rippon's meeting house in Carter Lane, Tooley Street..., c. 1800-1810. Landscape 12mo (12 x 25 cm), pp. xx, 320 (engraved music), [ii] index, some light spotting and staining, worn half calf over marbled boards, lower headcap neatly restored. Ownership inscriptions (M. Bryan and Annie Weare) dated 1813 and 1870. A long tear in the index leaf at the end has been carefully stitched back together by an early owner. Beneath the imprint is a printed note: "Those persons who purchase six Copies of Mr. R. may have a seventh Gratis", suggesting that copies were purchased in quantities for congregations as well as by individuals. 'Mr R' (Dr John Rippon 1751-1836) was a Baptist minister, who preached from the Carter Lane Chapel in Bermondsey from 1773, although he was relocated due to the construction of the new London Bridge. He is buried in Bunhill Fields. The first edition of this work appears to be 1792, and there were numerous revised and expanded editions. Book
