Smithsonian, 1992. Hardcover. Fine/fine. FIne condition (some foxing to the edging of the text block) in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. xv+ 217 pp. with bibliography and index. illustrated with photos. In July, 1941 the U.S. Army Air Corps, responding to pressure, opened its ranks to blacks and formed four fighter squadrons exclusively composed of black men. They came to be known as the "Tuskegee Airmen". Drawing on oral interviews, the units' official records, records of the Army and rmy Air force, and federal government archives, the author compiles the operational and combat history of these units from their early training at Tuskegee, Alabama to aerial combat in the European theater.
