About This Item

Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press, 1971. Secret societies in late Qing and early Republican China have been little understood by outsiders, but have played an outsized role in Chinese rebellion and dissent. Originating possibly as far back as the Han Dynasty or earlier, their more recent incarnation was as a revolutionary force with the objective of ridding the country of the Manchu usurpers and reverting China to indigenous Ming rule. In the period covered by the present volume, they evolved into potent anti-foreign political organizations, peasant benevolent societies and some eventually into Mafia-style criminal gangs. Chesneaux provides much detail about the history of these societies, as well as their arcane rituals and covenants. Translated from the original French by Gillian Nettle, with a foreword by Leon Comber. xii, 210 pp., 20 b&w plates.. First English Edition. Hardbound. Fine/Fine. 22 x 14 cm..
