About This Item
Cambridge: Macmillan and Co., 1859. First edition. Cloth. Good Only. 7" by 5.5". Richard Doyle. A first edition copy of 'The Scouring of the White Horse' from the author of 'Tom Brown's School Days', Thomas Hughes . Hughes's second novel 'The Scouring of the White Horse' is often noted as being startlingly 'eccentric', a combination of a travel book and a record or local history all in the form of a novel. The text also contains a study of the class system in England, all the while describing the chalk-cut horse on the hill at Uffington (in Berkshire); making the text a compelling, if not unusual read. Delightfully illustrated throughout, with vignettes and decorative capitals, by Richard Doyle. In the publisher's bright blue cloth binding, with decorative gilt illustrations to the front board and spine. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed, with shelfwear and slight loss to the spine. Small mark to the rear board. Both joints are ever so slightly starting, with the rear hinge tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright, with the odd handling mark and spot. Small ink signature to the front free endpaper. Good Only
