First U.K. edition. *Originally published in French. 'From 1530 a new artistic style, derived, from Mannerism, was introduced by Italian artists, working under Francis I's patronage, into the royal palaces of France. The founders of this style, Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio, worked in the royal chateau at Fontainebleau; by forming an artistic link between Italy and northern Europe, there were to exercise a wide and profound influence' [wrapper blurb].
