About This Item

Hutchinson, 1940. 1st edition. Hardcover. Signed by the author on the title page and inscribed by him 'For P. Ellard Handley/ This wartime story/With very best wishes/from/Dennis Wheatley/Jan 15th 1940'. Original black boards are somewhat rubbed and marked, the backstrip lettering has faded, and the corners, spine ends and spine folds show some wear. Occasional patches of foxing on the pages, which are otherwise fairly clean, one leaf with a couple of small edge-tears. Map endpapers with figures by Diana Younger, the daughter of Wheatley's third wife Joan. This is the third of the author's novels to feature Gregory Sallust, and the first of Sallust's wartime espionage adventures. Scarce with the author's signature. Wheatley said that the model for Sallust was a Gunner officer he knew called Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe.
