About This Item
Paris: Michel Levy Freres, Libraires-Editeurs, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. The first issue with the word "effraya" for "effrayerent" on page 5 and "Scissites" instead of "Syssites" on pages 251, 368, and 370. half-title with advertisement to verso, 474pp., (1)pp. table, bound with eight original "before letters" proof etchings including a title page by Pierre Vidal, printed by A. Salmon and published by Aphonse Lemerre in 1884. This collection of etchings was produced to accompany the newly published edition. The customer could have their book rebound incorporating these etchings or simply have them kept together with their new edition. Our etchings are proofs "before letters" as the etched title page does not include the author, title, or editor's name which would have been done by the lettering artist once the proofs were approved. The original published etchings were printed on laid paper, the proof copies as in our example were printed on wove paper. All handsomely bound in 3/4 red morocco over black & gold moulded paper, raised bands, spine lettering, and top edge gilt, marbled endpapers some scattered foxing but mostly to only a few leaves at front and rear. We have located only one set of these etching housed at Texas Tech University which is on laid paper. A very nice copy with the exceedingly rare Vidal etchings. [Carteret 1:266; Vicaire III:724-25].
