About This Item
France cpso Corbet, Patrick. Les Saints Ottoniens. Sainteté dynastique, sainteté royale et sainteté féminine autour de l'an Mil. Préface de Michel Bur.(Series: Beihefte der Francia, Bd. 15). Sigmaringen: Jan Thorbecke Verlag, 1986, 288 pages, 8 illus. on plates notes, bib, index. Very good in dust jacket. $52.50 Box A 122
"With the help of the fama sanctitatis of their 'dynastic saints' (Oda, Edith and Mathilde), the Ottonian dynasty tried to relate the divine choice of this progenitor to the successes of the family. This family cult, which was initially vigorously pursued, was already neglected by the royal house at the end of the 10th century, which now justified its legitimacy in a different way. In the hagiographical collection, two notable, contradictory texts stand out - the Epitaph to Adelheide by Odilo of Cluny and the vita Mahthildis posterior - which, however, agree on one important point: they declare married family life and Christian virtues, kingship and sainthood to be quite compatible".
