New York: Gould, Banks & Co. / Albany, NY: Wm. & A. Gould & Co., 1842.. 1842.. Good. - Octavo, contemporary tan calf with a gilt-lettered leather label on the spine. The leather is rubbed & scuffed with a tear to the rear cover. The front edge of the rear cover & the head of the spine are darkened with the leather dried out & cracked. The tail of the spine is lightly chipped. xxx, [1] leaf & 408 pages. There are small pieces out of the top & bottom edges of the front endpaper. There is scattered foxing & light staining. Good. <p>First edition.<p>Thomas W. Clerke was Professor of Law at the University of the City of New York. He was a Judge of the Court of Appeals and a Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York.<p>This copy is from the library of a mid-19th century lawyer whose name is penned on the front endpaper and flyleaf, with his initials at the top of the title page. He has tipped several newspaper clippings onto the pastedowns and endpapers and has made ink notes on the rear blank, endpaper & pastedown with some ink and pencil notations in the margins of the text. The signature of a later owner is also penned on the flyleaf.<p>Scarce.
