About This Item

Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, 1960. Limited Edition. Cloth in Slipcase. Fine/Slipcase Very Good. 4to. Pp. 616. Frontis. portrait. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photo reproductions. Index. Bound in half black cloth over salmon buckram with beveled edges, a gilt facsimile of Rosenbach's signature on the front board, gilt lettering stamped on spine. In the publisher's plain paper-covered slipcase that has a decal shadow on one panel, a light scratch on the other. Of an edition limited to 250 copies, this is hand-numbered copy 135. Often cited as the greatest of bookseller biographies.

Dr. R., known in Paris auction houses as "Le Napoléon des Livres," was more than the most prominent of 20th-century American antiquarian booksellers: On one side of the leaf he was a promoter of book collecting, rationally suggesting valuable books as an investment; on the other, he was a scholar of depth and wide berth who contributed substantially to the world of bibliography. This copy in exemplary condition.
