About This Item

Los Angeles:: Trans-Anglo Books, November, 1970.. 5th Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: brown binding with silver spine text; the spine is slightly slanted, otherwise a Very Good book with a Very Good (but somewhat darkened) dust jacket; the jacket is price clipped.. 4to (11.25 inches tall) . Appendix, index. Map endpapers (front); photo endpapers at rear. Description: Profusely illustrated in black and white, and includes a color illustration as well. Title page in red and black. The publisher's blurb (from the original edition of 1962) reads: ''It was the vast system of interurbans that developed in Southern California starting in the late 1880s which was responsible, more than any other single factor, for the area's growth into a sprawling land of many communities rather than one compact city marked by skyscrapers and slums. The text recalls the dramatic battles between rail tycoons which came at the turn of the century when Henry E Huntington reportedly planned to use electric interurbans for a system spanning California and possibly the nation. It also analyzes the factors which ended the interurban car. Covers such subjects as labor relations, accidents, real estate development, excursions, and advertising programs.'' This third edition contains an expanded text and additional photographs. An index was added for the second edition of 1965.
