One of the foremost literary and music critics of the time, Richard Grant White (1822-1885) was also a journalist, lawyer, social critic and a significant Shakespearean scholar. A graduate of New York University, he studied medicine under Dr. Alfred C. Post and read law with Judge Woodruff before being admitted to the bar. Born to wealth, he re-created himself after his father was forced into bankruptcy and descended into poverty. White pursued his career as a lawyer and wrote music and literary criticism which brought him to prominence. He wrote for The Courier and Enquirer, which eventually became the The New York World. A social critic, he gained even more recognition for his essay "The Public-School Failure" in 1880. He became chief of the United States Revenue-Marine, which later became the Coast Guard, following the outbreak of the Civil War. White published 2 editions of Shakespeare's works.
