About This Item
A superb illustrated broadsheet (43.5 x 31.5 cm)
Paper age-toned, centrefold (strengthened to the rear with archival tape), minor chipping to paper edges. Very good condition.
Large vignette of the Virgin Mary appearing to two Saintly figures, very likely Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. The instigation of the recitation of the Hail Mary accompanied by genuflections is attributed to Saint Dominic who spread the custom among his closest disciples.
Under the vignette are the indulgences in three sections each with five vignettes (the engravings are unsigned) corresponding to the mysteries, the joyful, the painful and the glorious episodes that give rise to devotion of the Virgin Mary, each having its own textual explanation.
El Lunes y Jueves los Misterios que se Han de Meditar son los de Gozo [On Monday and Thursday the Mysteries to Meditate on are those of Joy]
El Martes y Viernes los Misterios que se Han de Meditar son los de Dolor [On Tuesday and Friday the Mysteries to Meditate on are those of Pain]
El Domingo, Miercoles y Sabado los Misterios que se Han de Meditar son los de Gloria [On Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday the Mysteries to Meditate on are those of Glory]
Rare. No copy identified in WorldCat. Only one library, the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Fundació Privada Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau), has been identified as holding copies (6).
Loosely based upon 'Modo de Rezar el Rosario a María Santísima' Valladolid., D. Dámaso Santarén, 1856 with some textual and illustration variations.
