About This Item

New York:: Harper & Brothers, 1942. A square, tight set -- complete in 2 volumes -- of this facsimile reprint of the 1838 First American Edition. Sharp corners. No owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked -- probably never read. Each volume has "1838" printed the foot of its title page, with no later years or printings indicated anywhere. However, this is almost certainly the facsimile reprint that Harper's published in 1942 as part of their 125th anniversary celebration. [Unlike the first London edition which appeared in 3 volumes, the First American Edition from Harper's was issued in 2 volumes only; See Howes USIANA]. Both volumes are bound in original green textured cloth, with a printed paper spine label. Each volume still has its original red geometric-pattern Dust Jacket (now protected in removable mylar). Red color has moderately faded on spines of DJs, however all lettering on the jackets remains clear and distinct. According to historian Charles Beard, this is: "... one of the ten or fifteen great travel books on America." Allan Nevins: "... richly instructive panorama of America in the 1830's..." Howes M348. See also Basler, Soliday and Larned. . Facsimile reprint of 1838 edition.. Hard Cover. Fine condition./VG DJs (closed tear, tiny chip). 2 vols: 276 + 239pp. + 4 page publisher's catalog.

If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
