About This Item
Soft cover. Fine. 8vo. Original printed wrappers, lacking back wrapper. Printed by A.H. Pemberton, Columbia, South Carolina 1843. First Edition. Edmund Ruffin was a prominent Virginia slaveholder and extremist linked with the Fire-Eaters, an unorganized group of extremist pro-slavery Southerners who urged the separation of southern states into a new nation. He is widely believed to have fired the first shot at Fort Sumter, sparking the Civil War. Ruffin was also a dedicated agricultural pioneer responsible for many advances in farming techniques. Increasingly despondent after the surrender of Robert E. Lee, Ruffin decided to commit suicide. On June 17th, 1865, he went up to his study and wrote one final diary entry before taking his life: And now with my latest writing and utterance, and with what will [be] near to my latest breath, I here repeat, & would willingly proclaim, my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, & to the perfidious, malignant, & vile Yankee race. Slight chipping to front cover; old ink inscription to upper right corner; some wear to spine; scattered foxing; o/w Fine.
