About This Item

United Kingdom: Spellmount Ltd Pub, 1999. New book, 301 pages. This book is a remarkable history in a number of repects. For one thing, it is an account of a Victorian military campaigner written by a man in the ranks, at a time when such accounts were still a rarity. Although it was something of a literary convention in the late nineteenth century for retired officers in the army and navy to write their memoirs, it was unusual for ordinary soldiers to do so. This is his personal diary of service in the Orange Free State and Transvaal at the end of the conventional war - and beginning of guerrilla operations.. Hard Cover. As New/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Having read only the first 60 pages on line, I find it to be an exceptionally well written and thoroughly absorbing account of an english soldier, a volunteer driver with the cavalry, leaving England and journeying to the South African interior to fight. Written in a diary style, with descriptive gems, it offers an entertaining protrayal of his life on board the troopship "Montfort" and in a foreign country at the turn of the 20th Century.
