This book was one of Crowell's Handy Volume Classics (4" x 6") with a Birch Bark Design boards and spine; these were produced in 1900-1901, while the company was at 46 East 14th Street in NYC, their last year there was 1900 this justifying the date for the book which is not dated. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good +; bumping to tips; fabric wear at tips, head, tail, and front spine shoulder; dust soiling to textblock edges. No DJ. Birch bark cloth boards and spine with brown lettering on the spine and front board; frontispiece photo of Ruskin with tissue guard. Clean internals. Interior hinges are sound and not split. 179 pp 16mo. In a unique take on Greek mythology, the influential Victorian-Edwardian sage considers the myth of the goddess Athena. Ruskin asks us to consider Athena-"in the heavens, the earth, and the heart"-as a vital force in the material world channeled by those leading virtuous lives and also as "the directress of the imagination and will." A clean very presentable copy.
