About This Item

Bath: Printed for Private Circulation. Good. 1873. 1st ed.. Inscribed by author . 1st ed., 8vo, original decorated green cloth, gilt decorations an d lettering. 41 [2] i-xxxiii. Tipped in photographic frontispiece of “Wordsworth’s Glen.” [See note below] A talk about the Quantock Hills area of southwest England, where Coleridge and Wo rdsworth wrote Lyrical Ballads, which Nichols writes about the la ndscape as well as some of the other "Quantock Poets," including Charles Lamb, Thomas Lovell Beddoes and Charles Lloyd. Gift inscr iption on FFEP “with the writer’s compliments” to Welsh mat hematician, photographer, and painter Rev. Calvert R. Jones, [180 4-1877]. We believe Jones may have provided the frontispiece phot o -- it is uncredited -- which would make this an especially appe aling association copy. A mathematician, musician, painter and pa rson, Calvert Richard Jones was introduced to photography by a co usin of W.H.F. Talbot. In 1845 he travelled to Malta and Italy, r eturning with a collection of photographs that he sold his prints through Talbot’s gallery. Jones continued to make photographs while travelling and his work stands out in the early development of photography because of his ability to fuse his technical skil l with the influence of his training as a watercolorist. . He was also one of the first members of the Photographic Society of Lon don. Jones took up residence in Bath in 1858, increasing the like lihood that the uncredited frontis photo here may be his. Accordi ng to the Getty Museum, “After 1856 Jones apparently gave up ph otography, although he continued to paint.” If we are correct and this is one of his photographs, it is probably one of the las t photos he published. CONDITON: Good; covers lightly soiled, cor ners and spine lightly rubbed; hinges partly cracked. Text block is clean and tight with no defects other than an image transfer o f the photographic frontis to the facing page. .

About Armadillo & Dicker Books & Ephemera

80 Years of Selling Things People Could Easily Live Without -- but now Online only.*****CONDITION: We are conservative graders. If we say FINE you can count on it. If there are any minor defects [e.g. minor shelf-wear] they will be noted. VERY GOOD means there is light shelf or surface-wear, possibly some light age-toning, maybe a prior owner's inked name inside -- but no significant defects. GOOD means we wish we had a better copy too, but still in collectable condition. Any significant defects will be noted. FAIR usually means the interior is good or better but the covers are heavily worn. POOR means both the interior and the covers are damaged. Again, significant defects will be noted.
