Leiden: Joannem van Kerckhem, 1737. First edition. 4to, 20x16cm, [xxiv], 384, [32]pp. Title in red and black with engraved vignette illustration. Contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked with original spine label laid in. Former owner's bookplate and stamp to front pastedown, lacking front free endpaper else clean internally. Boards a bit rubbed at corners. An attractive copy.
Perhaps one of Dutch writer, Cornelius van Bynkershoek's (1673-1743), most important and influential works, being a study on international law of armed conflict. The first part is one of the first evaluations of modern laws of war, dealing with the seizing of power, sovereignty, violence against civilians, prisoners of war, etc. Full title is Quaestionum Juris Publici, Libri Duo, Quorum Primus Est de Rebus Bellicis, Secundus de Rebus Varii Argumenti.
This copy from the historic law library of Maurice E. Locke (1861-1919) of Dallas, TX. Locke, a bibliophile in addition to his trade, established his practice in 1891 and built up one of the largest privately owned law libraries west of the Mississippi during the early decades of 20th century.
