Lewis Harvie Blair (1834Ð1916) was a banker, manufacturer and land-owner. He was extremely liberal and was ostracized in 1889 when he wrote this workUnhappily, he later recanted these liberal thoughts, possibly influenced by his second wife Martha Ruffin Field whom he married in 1898.In 1964 the title was reprinted by Little Brown with an introduction by C. Vann Woodward who edited the new edition
