About This Item
Hardcover. Good. George Allen, Orpington and London, 1899; 3 volumes, 8vo, 125 x 180mm; pp xii, 358, x, 362, viii, 328; bound n full burgundy roan, sides gilt lined, spines titled gilt, all edges gilt; roan is not the most robust of leathers and this set suffers from a marked variance between the fine appearsance of the sides and the rather worn and dulled states of the spines; further, the back hinge of volume I has split along roughly half its length and the front hinge of volume III is split for about 3cm; gilt floral patterned end papers, four engraved plates in total, clean and firm internally; volume I carries a neatly hand written note dated 21 Aug 1901 gifting the book as a wedding present to J Herbert Edwards, signed by Archibald Daniel. ... ... ... First published in three volumes, 1885-1889, the title resembling the Scott Moncrieff translation of Proust (Remembrance of Things Past), the work is Ruskin's autobiography, a work generally considered eloquent but somewhat unreliable as to historic fact. Widely available as odd volumes the work is far less comoonly found complete, as here. ... ... ... NOTE that as the volumes weigh some 1.5kg overseas orders (but not domestic ones) will most likely incur as carriage supplement.
